Due to ongoing intense cold wave with dense fog for last several weeks, the Boro seedlings are turning ellowish and losing its productivity in different areas of Sirajganj district. The saplings are not growing as the blockage of cold water from the fog in seedbeds and lack of sun light.
The farmer’s of the district are now worried about to get desirable production of boro paddy in coming monsoon since the unfavorable state of weather though they are trying best to save saplings from the hit of cold wave by covering seedbeds with clothes and polythene sheets.
Fazal Ali, a farmer of Tarash upazila said to this reporter, “I did not get the right price of paddy in previous monsoon, so I was trying to recover the loss cultivating boro crops. But due to extreme cold and fog my boro seedbeds are gradually becoming yellowish losing its productivity. Already, many seedlings have badly damaged due to the frozen water.”
Azizul Sharker, a farmer of sadar upazila, said, “The saplings are dying as the cold hits seedbeds severely. On the other hand, the saplings that are good are not growing and becoming yellowish as the lack of sun light. We regularly are providing pesticides and deep tube wells hot water according the guidance of agricultural officials. If such weather remains a few more days, farmers will need to prepare seedbeds again that will make enormous loss for us indeed.”
Habibul Haq, deputy director (DD) of the District Agriculture Extension Department said to The New Nation, “A total number of 1 lakh 40 thousand hectors of land have been brought under Boro seedbeds in nine upazilas of this district in current season. To achieve this goal, about 7 thousand hectors of land have been prepared for seedbeds. Of them 30 to 35 percent seedbeds already been affected by intense cold and dense fog, he also said. If such cold and dense fog continues for another 2 weeks, there is a possibility of major damage to the seeds across the district.”
He further added, “As precaution farmers are advised to cover the seedbeds with polythene during the day and soak the bed whole night from the afternoon with 5 to 2 inches of water to protect the seedlings from the cold and fog. Besides farmers, the union deputy assistant agricultural officials have also been asked to be aware
about it.”
