Biting cold coupled with dense fog due to a mild cold wave has left normal life in Sylhet city and its adjoining upazilas crippled for the last few days. According to local met office, the district experienced 12.9 degree Celsius temperature at 7am yesterday. Temperature, as met officials forecasted, could keep plummeting after the dusk. People, particular the poor, homeless and floating ones, in the area are bearing the brunt of the bone-hilling cold weather. Children and elderly people are also not lagging behind in this case as most of them are suffering from cold-related diseases. During a visit at the child ward of Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital yesterday this reporter found some 33 children were undergoing treatment.
Of them, 17 were hospitalised only yesterday. The little patients are attacked by viral, bacterial and respiratory deceases like pneumonia, diarrhoea, asthma, and so on. The severe cold also are also hitting day labourers hard, making them sit idle for want of work.
