As the winter sets in, hospitals across the country are seeing a sudden rise in the number of patients, with complaints of cold-related diseases.
According to doctors, the number of inpatients and outpatients related to breathing problems, cough, diarrhoea and viral fever now visiting different hospitals and clinics for treatment.
They said the sudden changes in temperature caused by the mild cold wave sweeping across the country are contributing to the high number of patients.
The doctors added that people who are predisposed to respiratory problems, such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases, have complained of intensified symptoms while taking treatment at hospitals.
Mentionable that the lowest temperature was recorded in Chuadanga at 8.4 Degrees Celsius on Friday, while it was 13.4 Degrees Celsius in Dhaka.
“In the last two days, we saw an increase in the number of cold-related patients, especially children and elderly people, in our hospital,”  
Shamim Kabir, Resident Medical Officer (RMO) at Chuadanga Sadar Hospital told The New Nation.
He said children and elderly people need special care during winter, as they are more vulnerable to sudden changes in temperature. The changing weather condition can easily affects their immunity and thus leads to respiratory infection.
Public hospitals in Dhaka have seen at least a 50 per cent rise in visitors in outpatient department (OPD) with winter-related illness, while more patients seen admitted as well.
About 300 children with cases related cold diseases are being admitted in the capitals’ Dhaka Shishu Hospital on Friday, sources said.
“Patients with cases related to flu, asthma, pneumonia and runny noses are admitted to the hospital for treatment. The cases mostly belong to children and elderly people,” an on-duty doctor told The New Nation.
Public hospitals in northern districts also see a sudden rise in the number of patients as the mild cold wave hits the region badly.
“Children and elderly people are crowding the Lalmonirhat Sadar Hospital and upazila hospitals with complaints of cold-related diseases, like pneumonia and diarrhoea,” said Kashem Ali, Civil Surgeon in Lalmonirhat.
