UNB, Dinajpur :
The workers and staffs of Barapukuria Coal Mine Company have been continuing their indefinite strike for the second consecutive day on Monday to press home their 13-point demand, including payment of nine months arrears.
Over one thousand workers started their strike from 6 am on Sunday. The coal nine workers staged demonstrations in front of the company’s entrance in the morning. Workers’ leaders said they gave ultimatum to the authorities on April 26 and started the strike as the authorities paid no heed to their demand.
The 13-point demands include permanent employment of outsourced workers as per the company organogram, payment of over nine months’ unpaid wages, introduction of profit bonus and others. Other demands are: introduction of gratuity bonus, a reduced 6-hour working shift for underground workers, rehabilitation of those families whose homes were damaged due to the mine operations, compensating the family members in the form of employment in the mining company etc. The Managing director of Barapukuria Coal Mine Company (BCMCL), Habib Uddin Ahmed said the other activities of the coal mine have been running properly, the strike would not hamper the coal supply in the power plant. Besides they were trying to resolve the matter as soon as possible, he said.
