The government has plan to establish 17 coal-fired power projects in Cox’s Bazar making experts and locals worried as it may pollute environment seriously.
According to the official sources, the government has acquired 11,642 acres of land in Cox’s Bazar for 17 coal-fired power plants to be built by 2031.
Experts said, after starting operation by those coal-fired power plants, the world’s largest sea beach town and adjacent areas will be the most polluted place in the country.
They expressed anxiety that the power plants would pose a great threat to human health, biodiversity and livelihood.
Contacted, MA Matin, Executive President of Bangladesh Paribesh Andolon, said it would not be acceptable to establish power plants in the environmentally sensitive areas like forests, hills and sea beaches. He said, as a civilized nation we have to save Cox’s Bazar and Maheshkhali.
Experts and local people said that China, India and Japan may convince the
government to implement such types of anti-environment projects. A section of dishonest officials and businessmen are pursuing such heinous matters only to secure their business.
Experts said that those kinds of development are not desirable as it may push the country into hazardous environment.
BAPA leaders said that some of the planned plants will be within 25 km of Cox’s Bazar and Chattogram city.
They warned that the planned power plants would be polluting the whole Cox’s Bazar areas within 40 years to pose a great threat to people and biodiversity.
The experts urged the government to rethink about establishing power plants in the tourism friendly districts.
