The CNG filling stations have resumed feeding cars after 24 hours. The government attributed ’emergency maintenance’ at Bibiyana gas field to the suspension that came into effect from Fridaymidnight.
Eid-ul-Azha holidaymakers had to suffer for the lack of transports due to the suspension on the second day of the celebration on Saturday. Many were ready to hire CNG-run auto-rickshaws but there were few. The cars and auto-rickshaws started to queue up in the CNG filling stations before the services resumed on Saturday midnight.
Some of the drivers brought their vehicles to the filling stations even in the afternoon as their reserves ran dry.
Pickup van driver ‘Touhidul’ told this news agency at a filling station at Kalyanpur around 11:50pm that he was waiting for two hours.
Another driver Abul Kalam at Moghbazar said he was waiting from the evening. A bus driver said his reserve exhausted in the evening after three trips. “So I am waiting for gas since then,” he said. Auto-rickshaw driver Abul Hossain at Sat Rasta said he earned ‘only’ Tk 500 in the day. He was waiting for an hour. Another auto-rickshaw driver ‘Babul’ said he was waiting from the evening.
“I could not earn one third of my day’s spending,” he said. The government had decided to keep all the refilling stations open for 24 hours for seven days starting three days prior to Eid.
Generally, refilling stations remain closed from 5pm to 9pm.
However, to ensure hassle-free journey of Eid holidaymakers, refilling stations every year are allowed to operate round the clock for a few days.
There are 570 CNG-refuelling stations across Bangladesh. These stations consume only five percent of the total supply. Chevron-run Bibiyana is the largest gas-field in the country. Around 45 percent of the total gas comes from this field.
