CNG drivers vandalise 60 vehicles in Sylhet

CNG-run auto-rickshaw drivers vandalised over 60 vehicles including buses, minibuses and microbuses at different points of the Sylhet city yesterday .
Md Morsalin, officer-in-charge of Dakkhin Surma Police Station said, They carried out the vandalism protesting bus owners’ demand of regulating the movement of auto-rickshaws on highways, He added that the vandalism took place in Kadamtali area, Humayun Rashid intersection and Uposhahar Point of the city, Protesting the vandalism, the bus owners stopped their services in all routes of the district for an indefinite period. Earlier, bus owners called a strike from tomorrow in all routes of the district to press home their demands.
Meanwhile, the auto-rickshaw drivers under the banner of Sylhet Zila Rickshaw Sramik Union staged a rally at the city’s Registry Maidan this afternoon.
Several hundred auto-rickshaw owners and drivers, who were going to join the rally, vandalised the vehicles, triggering sporadic clashes with bus workers.
In retaliation, the workers vandalised 10 CNG-run auto-rickshaws during the clash.
Police fired 29 rounds of rubber bullets to bring the situation under control.
