Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) on Monday launched three digital services including mobile application for the city residents with a view to making police services more accessible.
CMP Commissioner Mohammad Shafiqul Islam formally inaugurated three technology-based services at his office.
The services are- mobile application, vehicle theft and recovery database and digital surveillance camera across the city.
CMP launched the three services with basic objectives to detect criminals, reduce crimes, detect and recover stolen vehicles and ease the growing traffic congestion.
Deputy Commissioners, Additional Deputy Commissioners, Assistant Commissioners of CMP and Officer-in-charge (OC) different police stations under CMP were present.
CMP Commissioner Mohammad Shafiqul Islam said the city is being brought under surveillance with close circuit cameras in order to counter crimes and handle traffic on the roads.
“Fifty six close circuit cameras have already been set up at 17 vantage points including seven entry points of the city”, CMP Commissioner said adding that it could take three to four months to bring the whole city under full surveillance.
He also hoped that the technological services could greatly help the city dwellers in receiving prompt police assistance as well as checking crimes and reducing traffic jam.
Elaborating the technological services, Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) of CMP, Detective Branch (DB), Babul Akhter said they have set up three kinds of high-powered cameras which are able to save vehicles’ number, detect faces of the participants in any meetings and rallies and take clear footages of surroundings.
“We have also opened a central control room at the headquarters to supervise traffic jam, know the status of the traffic flows at specific areas and take steps following the camera footages”, he added.
CMP sources said ‘Vehicle Theft and Recovery Database’ would save different information about lost vehicles and their owners.
“The software will automatically notify the owner through short message service (SMS) if police recovers any stolen vehicle”, the sources added.
Besides, the mobile application would help the users to
identify the nearest police station, call the nearest police
station’s OC or on-duty officer, get direction to the police station
on emergency, get detailed information about various services of the CMP and inform the police about any incident, CMP sources said.
CMP Commissioner Mohammad Shafiqul Islam thanked the owners of different institutions which have provided logistic supports free of cost in launching the services and urged the city dwellers to help police by providing information.
