The Academic Council also decided on Tuesday to resume classes on Nov 27 after a shutdown over clashes.
Eight of the punished students have been suspended for two years, two for one and a half years, and 20 others for one year, CMC Principal Shahena Akhter said.
The college authorities decided to close the institution and asked students to leave the dormitories on Oct 30 after three people were injured in the clashes and one of them was hospitalised.
According to witnesses, supporters of Deputy Education Minister Mohibul Hassan Chowdhury and Metropolitan Awami League General Secretary AJM Nasir Uddin were involved in the clashes.
Meanwhile, Chittagong Medical College (CMC) will reopen on 27 November after the closure following a clash between two factions of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) CMC unit.
The authorities decided to suspend 30 students for several terms for their involvement in the clash.
CMC principal Prof Dr Shahena Akter made the decision in an academic council meeting on Tuesday morning.
However, no decision was taken on reopening students’ dormitories during the meeting.
On 30 October CMC closed for an indefinite period following the clashes.
A student named Akib, 21, was injured critically during the conflict. His brain had been damaged due to external injury.
A heavy blow, causing internal bleeding in the brain, crushed his skull. He was released from the hospital after 19 days on Thursday last.
All students’ dormitories were closed immediately after the incident.
Earlier, the meeting was called to address the investigation report into the incident that was submitted by the probe committee on Monday, Dr Sahena Akhter said.
“The college’s academic environment has suffered because of some rowdy students. Even after gatherings were banned, they continued to engage in internal conflicts. They were ultimately expelled for these reasons,” she added.
On the night of October 29 and in the morning of October 30, back-to-back clashes broke out at the CMC between the followers of Deputy Minister of Education Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Nowfel and the followers of City Awami League General Secretary AJM Nasir Uddin.
Mahadi Akib, Mahfuzul Haq and Naimul Islam were injured in the clashes. Among them Akib is the follower of Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury and the other two are followers of Nasir Uddin.
Subsequently, the campus was declared closed indefinitely in the afternoon of October 30. The college authorities ordered the students to leave the hall that evening. At the same time an inquiry committee was formed.
