Private clinics and diagnostic centres are on strike for the second day in Rajshahi.
Their prime demand is immediate release of the two clinic managers who were nabbed during a raid by a mobile court on Tuesday. The have put forward two more demands – that clinics will not be fined more than Tk 5,000 and the hike in holding fees and signboard fees be rolled back.
The strike started after a mobile court of District Magistrate Sarwar Alam led a raid on clinics and diagnostic centres at Lokkhipur on Tuesday. The court fined Amana Hospital Tk 350,000, Royal Hospital Tk 375,000 and Delta Diagnostic Centre Tk 100,000. Managers of Amana Hospital and Royal Hospital were arrested.
The court found out-of-date medicines and unhygienic operation theatres, Magistrate Sarwar told bdnews24.com “A medicine which expired on Jul 19, 2015 was found in use. We also found the operation theatres dirty and some pathological test reports signed by non physicians,” he said.
Protesters have said the strike will continue until the three demands were met.
General Secretary of Rajshahi Clinic and Diagnostic Centre Owners Association Mokhlesur Rahman said: “Thousands of medicines are kept inside a clinic. Only two were found out of date.”
He urged authorities to follow the 1982 law and not fine any clinic more than Tk 5,000 in keeping with it.
“No clinic in Rajshahi has the ability to pay a fine of taka three to four lakh,” he added.
Patients suffered grossly due to the strike. Many of them were seen waiting in front of the clinics since 11am on Wednesday. Altab Hossain, who came with his wife from a village of Bagmara Upazila, said: “I consulted a gynaecologist three days before and did some tests.”
“Today I came to pick up the reports only to find the clinic closed. Now I have to return 60 kilometres.”
Many quarters have criticised the clinic owners for causing sufferings to the patients. First they used out-of-date medicines and now they are making the patients suffer, said leaders of Rajshahi Rokkha Sangram Parishad. “They are violating their (patients’) human rights by holding them hostage. They should be brought to justice,” said Jamat Khan, general secretary of the platform.
