Climate Change Research Confce at IUB

The inauguration of the First Annual Gobeshona Conference on Climate Change Research in Bangladesh was held on the Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) campus in city’s Bashundhara area on Thursday.
The Gobeshona Conference is an international conference that brings together multiple stakeholders both nationally and internationally, to discuss recent research findings related to climate change in Bangladesh. It sets out to evaluate how such research findings can help in tackling the impacts of climate change.
Minister for Water Resources Barrister Anisul Islam Mahmud attended the programme as Chief Guest.
While, Deputy Minister of Environment and Forest (MoEF) Abdullah Al Islam Jakob and Her Excellency Sophie Aubert, Ambassador of France, Dhaka, attended the programme as special guests.
Dr Ainun Nishat, Professor Emeritus, of BRAC University chaired the ceremony.
Among others, Dr Saleemul Huq, Director, International Centre for Climate Change and Development (ICCCAD) at IUB, Dr Atiq Rahman, Executive Director, Bangladesh Centre for Advanced Studies, Prof M Omar Rahman, Vice Chancellor, IUB and Rashed Chowdhury, Chairman, Board of Trustees, IUB, also spoke on the occasion.
In his speech, Anisul Islam said, “Climate change is the most important issue of our country now and if we fail to address it timely it may cause havoc for the country.”
He highly appreciated the initiative taken by IUB and hoped that this annual event will bring together young researchers to combat the adverse impacts of climate change.
Dr Nishat said Bangladesh is self-sufficient in terms of agricultural production, but climate change is going to make the food security and livelihood survival very difficult.
He added that the low-lying southern coastal regions of the country are the most vulnerable, despite being protected by a long network of flood embankment.
The conference aims to improve the quality of climate change research in Bangladesh by building the capacity of Bangladeshi researchers. It will conclude on January 11, 2015.
