Climate change, growing population, their increasing trend of living in cities and need for renewable energy are the new challenges for Bangladesh (BD), said a water and land resource expert.
Increasing population density mainly in the urban areas is spreading pollution. A growing demand for safe water and sanitation facilities are the two burning challenges for the country, opined Gerhard Van
Den Top, Chairman of (Water Board Amstel & Vecht): New Land for Sustainable Growth.
Gerhard Van Den Top’s said it when he presented the keynote at a session styled ”Water and Land Resource Management, Sustainability and Environment Impact’, organised by Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) in a city hotel.
”Sustainable land reclamation and water management initiatives can help rescue Bangladesh from these problems”, he added.
Referring to the long historical background in working together between Bangladesh and Netherlands on land reclamation, Dr. Gerhard said, we are willing to share our combined historical and contemporary experience and knowledge with a circular and resilient approach to this challenge. Water and Waste Management are important pillars in that approach.
State Minister for Water Resource Anisul Islam Mahmud moderated the session, while Professor Shafiqul Islam, Director of Water Diplomacy Program of Tufts University, USA, Firdaus Ali, Advisor to the Minister of Public Works and Housing of Indonesia and Vice President of the Asia Water Council: Land Reclamation in Indonesia, Ainun Nishat, Professor Emeritus, Center for Climate Change and Environmental Research, BRAC University and Boudewijn Jansen of Rebel Group, Netherlands: Projects in Bangladesh also delivered lectures on the subjects at the session.
