Adaptation with the adverse climate change impacts through innovation of time-befitting and need-based newer ways, technologies and stress tolerant crop varieties has become a must for attaining food security.
To attain sustainable food security, experts, scientists and researchers have opined for conducting continuous research to find out innovative ways, strategies and need-based policies to keep agro-productions increasing under changing climate.
Executive Director of Rangpur-based research organization North Bengal Institute of Development Studies Dr Syed Samsuzzaman said adverse impacts of climate change on agriculture, environment, ecology and bio-diversity cannot be overcome overnight.
He put emphasis on conducting continuous research for innovation of newer ways, need-based techniques, strategies and technologies for enhancing cultivation of stress tolerance crops through disseminating and popularising those among the farmers.
The proposed and under-implementation global efforts might start improving the deteriorating climatic situation very slowly in course of times, but agro-productions must be kept increasing to meet food demand for the growing population, he added..
Noted environmentalist and Consultant of International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) in Bangladesh Dr M G Neogi said climate change have already affected agriculture, irrigation, navigation, ecology, bio-diversity, environment and underground water levels.
As a result, seed sowing periods, seasonal rainfalls, floods, cyclones, droughts, cold and hot spells, sea and surface warming, water contamination, water and soil salinity, aquatic systems, silting and drying up of rivers, underground water levels are being affected.
The situation degrades faster because of melting ice due to temperature rise following huge emission of the Green House Gases like Carbon Dioxide, Methane, Nitrous Oxide, Hydro-flouro-carbons, Per-flouro-carbons, Sulphur Hexa-fluoride,” he added.
