Climate adaptation, mitigation program in coastal zones

The Building Future Climate Experts project has been working to make the younger generation of coastal areas more efficient in tackling climate change in Barguna, Barishal, Jhalokathi and Patuakhali districts, which are at risk of climate change, under the slogan “Grooming the Future Climate Leaders’ ‘.
Ahead of the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference (in short COP-26) on Global Climate Change, the British Council has launched the “COP-26 Challenge Fund” for young organizers around the world.
Injamul Safin, a Youth Leader of Youth Ending Hunger Bangladesh proposed the proposal titled “Building Future Climate Experts in 10 Schools and Communities of Barguna, Barishal, Jhalokathi and Patuakhali Districts ” and won the fund.
The project’s goal is to create the future climate experts by developing the leadership of students and the younger generation in risky areas for climate change adaptation and mitigation.
The project has organized various programs in 10 schools and communities of four (4) districts. Notable among these are training programs on “Climate Change and It’s Impact”, “Gardening Methods and Strategies”, “Methods of Producing New Trees from Seeds and Grafts”.
Under the project, various socio-cultural activities are being organized with the participation of the younger generation.
In the meantime, various training activities were conducted at Karnakathi under Sadar upazila of Barishal district, Athargachia under Amtali upazila of Barguna district, Lohalia under Sadar upazila of Patuakhali district, Gachua under Muladi upazila of Barishal district, Nabogram under Sadar upazila of Jhalokati district and Kashipur under Barishal City Corporation, Kaunia of Barishal City Corporation Area and Jhalokathi District Shilpakala Academy.
The program also included 6 training programs through online platforms.
The project team members along with the trainees made a backyard garden, a front yard garden, a roof garden and a community garden. Under the project, a national level competition titled “Idea Contest on Building Future Climate Expert ” has been organized.
Umme Sumaiya, a student of Dhaka University’s Institute of Education and Research, became first, Chinmoy Mitra Shuvo, a student of the Communication Disorder Department of the same university, became second and Md. Alamin Hossain, a student of Soil and Environmental Sciences Department of Barishal University, became third in the contest.
A program titled “National Quiz Contest on Climate-2021” in association with different organizations was also held. The project announced two programs titled “National Climate Action Award-2021” and “Slogan Contest on Climate”.
The members of the Building Future Climate Expert Project team are committed to continue their work for climate change adaptation and resilience by involving young people in risky areas.
They successfully provided different training for 600 younger people of 4 coastal districts to tackle a variety of issues, including rising sea levels, cyclones, tidal surges, loss of seasons, and negative impacts on biodiversity.
Now, younger people of the communities are prepared for tackling climate hazards.
