NEWSPAPERS reported that at least 22 people, including former Awami League lawmaker of Nilphamari-3 and upazila unit AL vice-president Golam Mustafa, were injured in a clash between two rival groups of the party in Jaldhaka of Nilphamari on Thursday. The clash took place when the groups hosted separate programmes to observe the National Mourning Day marking the 44th anniversary of country’s founding President Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s assassination. Five police personnel also received injuries at that time. Nilphamari Additional SP said police fired 13 tear gas shells and 13 rubber bullets to bring the situation under control.
Earlier, on August 10, two Awami League activists were killed and 15 others injured in a fierce factional clash in Nagarkanda upazila of Faridpur. Two groups — one led by Kabir Hossain alias Sandu Mia, Kaichal union parishad chairman, and another led by Hanif Mia alias Hridoy, a Jubo League central committee member, clashed with lethal weapons at the village, leaving at least 15 activists of both the groups injured. Of the injured, Roushan and Tuhin — followers of UP chairman Sandu — succumbed to their injuries in the hospital. Locals said there had been a longstanding feud between the two groups over establishing supremacy in the area.
When politics needs no popular legitimacy, elections are conspiracy against the people, nothing is left of politics of the people. Every occasion, even the mourning of the Father of the Nation, is treated as a matter of who are to be counted for more loyalty for more favour. As the politics has become a personal gainful affair, clashes for self-interest among party groups are nothing unusual. The whole country is a victim of political clashes among groups of party in power for group interests. The opposition is finished by police power and not by political contest for the people’s popularity. The government has no realisation about the shame of election results decided by the police.
