Police have closed down a bar-cum-restaurant in the city’s Uttara fearing possible terror attack while the café owner failed to install security apparatus in the scheduled time as per requirement of the law enforcement agencies.
Confirming the matter, Deputy Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police [Uttara Zone] Bidhan Tripura told The New Nation on Friday evening that police shut down the café ‘Nest’ on security ground.
“We had asked the restaurant owner to introduce security arrangement to avert any possible militant attack. But they failed to do so till the date. So, we’ve directed them to keep close the café,”
the DC DMP said. The café is housed in a building at house no: 12, road-14/A, sector: 4, Uttara Model Town in the capital where usually foreigners used to gather to have food and drinks in a suitable atmosphere.
Earlier in the last month, the restaurant owner being pressured by the security agencies had imposed restriction on the arrival of foreigners. But the restaurant was finally closed yesterday.
“It’s first ever case of shut downing a restaurant by the police on security ground. We will take such action in the future on other restaurants if they fail to provide required arrangement. At the same time, we’ve also directed other business farms, including banks, insurance, commercial office and others, to install necessary security apparatus,” Bidhan Tripura said.
Echoing the same, the building owner also had created pressure on the café authorities to install security set-up as per requirement of law enforcement agencies, otherwise vacant the floor, sources said.
It’s not the single case. In another incident, the owner of a posh restaurant Lake Terrace recently imposed restriction on the foreigners fearing possible terror attack and also hanged a notice at the entrance of the café expressing regret over the issue.
The restaurant is situated on rooftop of a five-storey building at 25/E, lake drive road, Sector -7, Uttara, in the capital where usually foreigners gather there to take taste of delicious sea food.
When contacted, DC Uttara Zone Bidhan Tripura said they did not create any pressure on Lake Terrace owners to snap restriction on the foreigners.
An owner of the restaurant said they were compelled to hang such notice imposing restriction on foreigners being pressured by the building owner, who is very much afraid of possible terror attack following an impact of Gulshan’s Holey Artisan Bakery.
“The Rajdhani Unnayan Katripakka after the attack of Holey Artisan Bakery served notice to all commercial establishments to shift from the residential area. For the said reason, the café owner has been asked to shift his business,” Waliul Hasnat, owner of the building, told the media recently.
Meanwhile, keeping deadly attack at Holey Artisan Bakery in mind, entire security arrangement of Gulshan, Banani, Baridhara, Uttara and Dhanmondi areas has been reorganized, police sources said.
As a part of new security arrangement, many roads have been restricted for which the cafés are not much crowded in these areas as it was in the past.
Recently, DMP Chief Asaduzzaman Miah sent a letter to the Ministry of Home Affairs where he mentioned that the entire security arrangement was restructured to ensure safety of the foreigners staying in the capital.
