The city residents, including women, demonstrated on Monday at Matuail, Gandaria and Kazipara in Mirpur demanding drinking water.
The demonstrators took to the streets with household buckets, pitchers, pots, bowl and other utensils, and raised slogans: Give us water. We are suffering much for want of water.
Housewife Rehana Akter living at Kazipara of Mirpur said, “We cannot do any household job for scarcity of water. It is common in our area. The crisis has deepened in this holy month of Ramzan. All of our adult family members
keep fast during Ramzan, but we cannot prepare Iftar items.”
“Can you imagine how will people live without water in city life? In rural area, people could manage water from water bodies for natural work, but what can we do in city?” She questioned.
The crisis of water is a common phenomenon in the city area, alleged Abu Raihan, a college student from Mirpur.
“I could not take a bath for last two days. It is not possible to describe the misery of it. Sometimes, we manage some water, but we have to store a part thereof for use at toilet,” he said. On June 5, two city mayors of Dhaka, its CEO’s were briefed at LGRD Ministry about their preparation for Ramzan.
At the meeting, LGRD Minister Khandakar Mosharraf Hossain directed WASA officials to remain alert.
According to WASA, there is a demand for 225 crore liters of water per day in Dhaka city while the capacity is 245 crore liters. Five water treatment plants and 712 pumps do the supply work.
“Though the supply is more than the demand, the crisis appears due to some technical problems including the old supply lines. The problems will be solved soon,” said a WASA official.
