Commuters suffered from acute traffic gridlock across the capital on Sunday.
Different streets including Airport Road, DIT Road, Khilgaon level crossing, Basabo, Maniknagar, Syedabad, Jatrabari, Gulistan, Fakirapool, Paltan, Shahbagh, Kakrail, Banglamator, Caravanbazar, Banani, Mohakhali, Mirpur, Farmgate, Kawran Bazar and adjacent areas become paralised with the traffic gridlock for hours after hours.
Every vehicle had to pass each intersection facing three to five traffic signals, commuters said.
“We have suffered most while crossing the Farmgate area to Mirpur in the morning. Vehicles seemed to have stalled at fixed places on roads. I have failed to attend my office meeting started at 11:am at Sheorapara due to untold traffic gridlock,” Shahid Uddin, a private job holder in Mirpur area told journalists.
He said, commuters in every vehicle seemed anxious of getting their offices near about the stipulated times.
Commuters from others streets in the city also expressed similar bitter experiences.
“I went to Syedabad from Khilgaon in two hours whereas it needed only 10 to 20 minutes on other days,” said Ariful Islam a commuter from the road.
Commuters, bus drivers and traffic police said that as the first working day of the week, Sunday observes such a traffic gridlock every time.
Meanwhile, different renovation work, road digging, construction work of Metro rail project and Elevated Expressway, and such other activities also are creating obstacle of speedy vehicular movements, sources said.
