Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) will set up formalin testing booths in 236 kitchen markets in the capital within a week to determine presence of the harmful chemicals in food items.
“We will set up the booths within seven to 10 days so that customers and retailers can get their food items tested at nominal costs,” DMP Commissioner Benazir Ahmed said.
The DMP Commissioner disclosed it at a National Press Club discussion in the capital on Wednesday on ‘Food without poison: Rights to mass.
SAARC Cultural Society organised the discussion with its President Syed Abu Hossain Babla presiding at.
“Police will provide the services and the university level students will test the food items,” Benazir said.
The DMP Commissioner also stressed the need for the government support and formation of a separate authority to make the anti-formalin campaign a success.
Around 600 tonnes of formalin is being imported into the country every year whereas the demand is 50 tonnes only, he said.
“We have already identified at least 38 institutes that imports formalin. We will keep vigil on their movement,” he warned.
Earlier on Tuesday, the High Court directed the authorities concerned to set up formalin testing booth in every kitchen market across the country.
