Moghbazar-Mouchak flyover is a part of integrated project and city dwellers will enjoy full facilities of the flyover after completion of the whole project .
This was disclosed by Shyama Prosad Adhikari, Chief Engineer of Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) while observing the traffic situation under and around the Moghbazar-Mouchak flyover yesterday .
He said, LGED has involved in this project after the approval of different government agencies including Dhaka Transport Coordination Board but a section of people has misconcept and LGED built Khilgaon-Sabujbagh flyover few years back showing its efficiency, he added.
The digging, construction materials narrowing the streets added to the sufferings of the residents of Moghbazar, Mouchak, Malibagh, Rajarbagh and Shantinagar areas when the construction of an eight-kilometre flyover began six years ago but when a group of journalists visited the Moghbazar-Mouchak flyover area yesterday found that the traffic jam has eased and people feel happy over opening the flyover .
The last phase of the Moghbazar-Mouchak flyover was opened for the public recently by the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina with hopes to alleviate public sufferings.
The residents of the areas are now pinning their hopes on the flyover to get some desperate relief from traffic congestion.
The traders at the shopping centres, who have been counting lost business since the start of the flyover’s construction in 2011, say they have heaved a sigh of relief after inauguration of the project .
Many feared the traffic jams might increase, because the roads under the flyover have become narrow while many of the drivers may avoid the flyover due to traffic signals on it but practically this area has become almost traffic jam free, locals said .
Abdur Rahim , a trader said , the he traffic congestions will never go away if vehicles other than rickshaws and auto-rickshaws are allowed on the streets under the flyover,” he said.
“It still takes few minutes to reach Mouchak from Eskaton over the flyover , Mouchak resident Abul Kalam said . .
The media earlier reported a flaw in the flyover’s design soon after the project’s work kicked off in January of 2011. The project’s foreign engineers designed the roads for left-wheel driving and left out right turns, experts had said.
