City dwellers hail proposed budget

Economists, entrepreneurs and leaders of different political parties on Thursday hailed the just announced proposed budget for the fiscal 2016-2017 terming it as a pragmatic and development-oriented. This budget is a step towards turning the country into a middle-income one by 2041, they commented.
In an instant reaction President of Chittagong Chamber of Commerce & Industries (CCCI) Mahbubul Alam termed the just announced budget for fiscal 2016-2017 as a business investment-friendly and highly ambitious one.”There are a lot of new programmes, incorporated in the budget to cope with the present tougher economic situation and industrialization”, he added.
He thanked the finance minister for accepting most of the proposals of CCCI including reduction of tax on imported raw materials for native industries. “The allocation in power, IT, education, health, food security, environment, ship building industries and human resources sectors got proper allocation”, he added. He also thanked the finance Minister for allocation for some flyovers in Chittagong, 16.5 Kilometer-long elevated expressway, outer ring road, 3.5 Kilometer tunnel under Karnaphuli river and Dohazari-Gundum railway line.
Terming the budget as satisfactory and production oriented one, social scientist Dr Anupom Sen said there should have been more allocation in education sector. He, however, thanked the government to set up the GDP target of 7.2 percent in the next fiscal.
City Jatiya Party (JP) leader Solayman Alam Sheth termed the proposed budget for the fiscal year 2016-17 as highly ambitious and development oriented political budget which would create opportunities for businessmen and private sectors.
Vice-chancellor of Chittagong University Prof Dr Iftekhar Uddin Chowdhury in his reaction termed the budget for the fiscal 2017 -2018 as “pro-people, balanced and welfare oriented”. He also thanked the government for increasing social safety net for the people of rural areas, rootless and landless people of the city. Hailing the proposed budget, Law Affairs Secretary of Chittagong city Awami League (AL) Advocate Iftaker Saimul said the pro-people budget would play a significant role to boost up the economy, poverty alleviation, improvement of quality education, empowerment of women establishing a Digital Bangladesh.
