Staff Reporter :
Railway Minister Mujibul Haque on Wednesday said that the government was planning to build a circular railway network around the Dhaka city to ease pressure on roads.
The minister told it to the reporters at a programme on “Development and future strategy of the country’s railway”, organised by Crime Reporters Association of Bangladesh (CRAB) at the Dhaka Reporters’ Unity (DRU).
But the minister did not give any tentative date of starting the project work or specified further.
He said that the next process of the project will begin after the completion of the feasibility study.
Mujibul Haque said, the railway lines will be of two lanes across the country and as efforts are on to improve of the railway service. He said “Maximum utilisation of the limited resource will be our motto in the service of the passengers. For this, 200 new coaches will be added to the present fleet next January.
The BNP-led coalition government did not undertake any effective development project about the railway, but the present government have undertaken 35 development programmes so far.
He said, the government has been taking an initiative to fill the vacant posts.
At present, the railway has been suffering from the man power crisis of about 12,000 employees, including a good number of loco masters (drivers).
The railway ministry recruited some 230 assistant drivers last year, but they would qualify to propel trains after seven years of training.
The Railway Minister said, they are trying to renovate the railway station and thinking of introducing electronic train between Dhaka and Chittagong.
Bangladesh Railway has huge estate of lands under its jurisdiction. It has been losing about Tk.70 billion annually due to inefficient management and large-scale corruption at all levels.
Neglect in terms of investment compared to other modes of transportation, poor operation, slack maintenance, and management crisis, low quality of service and widespread corruption are believed to be the main causes.
