Chattogram Bureau :
Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) officials yesterday seized a container loaded with foreign-made cigarette, worth over Tk 10 crore, at Chattogram port on Sunday.
CIID sources said a total 586 mega cartons of cigarettes, which were carried in 20 feet long container, imported from Singapore by Dhaka-based Companies named ‘Messer’s Islam Enterprise and Messer’s Anwar and Company Limited’.
The container reached Chattogram port on April 26, by false declaration and CIID detected the big cigarette smuggling in the port while physical examination of the container was conducted on that day.
On information, the CIID conducted the drive at a Container Yard at Patenga and detained a container of the companies loaded with cigarettes, worth about Tk 10 crore, said Dr AKM Nuruzzaman, Commissioner of Chattogram custom House.
“The company in letter of credits declared that they have imported cotton under bond facilities. Practically we have found cigarettes,” said Nuruzzaman.
But no office or factory was found at the respective addresses of the companies, he said. The owner of the importing firm and its representatives went into hiding after seizure of the goods, he said adding they would take legal steps against the persons involved in the forgery.
