Cigarette fire claims lives of mother, son

A seven-month old boy and her mother died following a devastating fire, originated from a lighter, engulfed the entire ground floor of a 5-storey building due to gas linkage in city’s Mirpur on Tuesday night.
The deceased have been identified as Tamim, and his mother Mina Akter, 22.
Tami’s father Manik Mian, 35 also received injuries during the fire which was spread our the building, said a Fire Service official.
The victims were rushed to Burn Unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) where the doctor declared Tamim dead around 1:30am and her mother around 2:00pm respectively.
Manik is the caretaker of the ill-fated building and lived on the ground floor with his family.
The fire burned 95 percent of Manik’s body and 80 percent of Mina, said Sub-Inspector Md Bachchu Mian at the DMCH police citing doctors.
Abdullah Al Arefin, a Senior Officer at Mirpur Fire Service Station, said “The fire started on the ground floor of the five-storey building after someone lit a cigarette.”
The fire broke out at the ground floor of the building around 11:45 and spread soon due to the leakage of gas line, he said.
