State Minister for Labour and Employment Mujibul Haque Chunnu on Thursday warned of shutting down the readymade garment (RMG) factories which would be failed to complete remediation under the supervision of Jatiya Udyog by December this year.
“All readymade garments in line with the assessment of Jatiya Udyog must complete necessary remediation or relocation by December next . . . otherwise those factories will be shut down on January next,” he said while exchanging views with the RMG factory owners at Apparel Club Conference Room of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) Bhaban here.
The meeting was told that a total of 755 readymade garment factories, out of 1,549, under the auspices of the Jatiya Udyog remain active and some 32 percent of remediation works in those factories were completed, said a press release. According to the release some 165 factories are yet to respond to the assessment criteria and in the meantime 753 factories were shut down while only seven RMG factories ensured cent percent relocation or reform works.
