Christian community of Barisal observed half day hunger strike and handed over memorandum on Sunday to administration protesting filling of historical pond of church for constructing court building.
PWD filled the pond under 10-storied ‘Judicial Magistrate Court Building Construction Project’ at the cost of Tk. 27 core.
Anisul Haque, law minister, scheduled to lay foundation of that building on Monday January 12, 2016, said Zakir Hossain, executive engineer PWD Barisal office.
The human chain was organised by Church of Bangladesh and participated by different sects of Christian community of the city in front of Ashwini Kumar Hall from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM.
An agitation rally also held during the hunger strike and after that marching on city roads a memorandum was handed over to the prime minister, law minister through district administration.
That human chain rally was addressed among others by Reverend Father Francis Pandey, Father Rinku Gomes, head of the church, Norbert Nipu Adhikari, president Barisal Christian Association, Shanti Mandal, representative Church of Bangladesh, Prince Babul Biswas, Shimul Mandal, Bimal Bepari,Swapan Chowdhury, Christian community leaders of Barisal.
The speakers said Barisal district judge court complex was constructed in 1816 and Barisal Saint Peter’s Church was constructed in 1849 on the lands leased from British PWD.
A large pond on 52 decimal of that land was excavated for bathing of Christians during their Baptizing and later it was recorded as property of the church.
The pond also used as reserve-pond for the use of citizens including drinking water resources, they said.
