Cholera has spread in Cox’s Bazar Rohingya camps alarmingly.
It has frightened the local people also, according to physicians, working in the refugee camps.
“Cholera patients are increasing day by day in the camps. More than 350 Rohingya refugees had been identified as cholera patients in last two months,” Dr. Abdul Matin, Civil Surgeon of Cox’s Bazar told Journalists.
He said, unsafe drinking water and unhealthy overall living environment are the main reasons of cholera spreading among the refugees. He said also that the local people are at risk of attack as about 100 of them (locals) are have already been attacked.
The civil surgeon said there is no report of death so far.
Apart from it, many Rohingyas have been attacked with Diarrhoea also.
International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh-ICDDR,B opened several centers to render medical treatment to diarrhoea infected people from Rohingyas and locals.
About 1500 diarrhoea patients from Rohingyas have been found in last two months in Teknaf ad Leda center of ICDDR,B.
Dr. Zakaria Selim from ICDDR,B’s Leda refugee center said about 700 diarrhoea infected Rohingya children are found here.
He said that in Myanmar, the Rohingyas were deprived of medical treatment facilities.
Thus most of them are suffering from many diseases. Their sickness resistance capacity is very weak. As such many diseases have infected them normally.
Both Dr. Abdul Matin and Dr. Zakaria Selim said there are no reasons to be panicked about the spreading of diseases.
They said as the physicians are giving medical treatment and creating awareness, the disease could be controlled soon.
