Cholera germs in Barisal river and canal water, says IEDCR

The widespread of diarrhea in Barisal division is due to the presence of cholera germs in the water of rivers and canals and use of this water in household works.
 Institute of Epidemiology Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) and divisional health director and District Civil Surgeon office confirmed that.
Divisional Health Office sources said that IEDCR has released the report.
From this report and information of the health officials of Barishal Division, it has been recommended not to use drinking water and house hold works from the sources of rivers , canals and ponds of water.
In the meantime, miking is also being done by requesting people not to use water from rivers and canals.
 Barisal Divisional Health Director, Dr. Basudeb Kumar Das said that a team of 6 people sent by IEDCR on March and they worked 1-14, March at Barguna and found cholera germs in the patients’ stool.
According to the preliminary report sent by IEDCR, stools of 20 people were tested and 3 people were tested for cholera rapid test and identified V. Cholerae and after culture at IEDCR lab found Escherichia Coli (one of Cholera germ) among them.
IEDCR Director Prof. Tahmina Shirin signed this report confirmed Divisional Health Director, Barishal told.
The Barisal division is prone to diarrhea at this time of the year, but this time it appears to be excessive. It is recommended to use water from deep tube wells or to use boiling water from river canals, he added.
 Meanwhile, Barisal District Civil Surgeon Dr. Monwar Hossain said, another team has been working in Barisal for the last few days, and they are also collecting the patient’s information.
According to the report 71 percent patient used river and canals water for their household works.
`The team already informed CS office that they have already found Escherichia Coli, germs from the stool of the patient and water from river and canals.’ said CS Barishal Dr. Monwar Hossain .
Resident Medical Officer of Barisal General Hospital Dr.Malay Krishna Baral said that after talking to the patients, it was learned that most of the patients used open water from canals, rivers and ponds for household works.
Dipankar Das IEDCR team member said, said that they have taken samples from hospitals in different upazilas including the General Hospital in Barishal district and the results will be given by IEDCR.
Barishal Divisional Commissioner Saiful Islam Badal said, “We are arranged miking in the remote area of every upazila to make people aware to prevent diarrhea.
“People asked to use water after being boilled’ he added. Apart from this, saline has been urgently sought in Dhaka so that there is no shortage of saline. He said the saline crisis would be over if 35,000 saline bags were released in the next few days.
 According to Barishal Divisional Health Office 35135 people infected from January till the report, and last 24 hours 1542 and nine are died from diarrhea diseases.
