A Chinese national was stabbed to death by a mugger near the construction site of Bangladesh-China Friendship Bridge over Kocha river in Pirojpur’s Sadar upazila on Wednesday evening.
The deceased, Laupha (58), was the chief technician of the project, said Masud Mahmud Sumon, executive engineer of Roads and Highways Department in Pirojpur.
Laupha was attacked by a mugger at Kumirmara village around 6:00pm when he was going to the project site on a bicycle to pay wages, Sumon said.
Molla Azad Hossain, additional superintendent of police (administration and crime) in Pirojpur, said the mugger snatched over Tk 2.0 lakh from him.
After receiving information, police rushed to the spot and recovered a knife, some money and the bicycle from the spot, said the additional SP. They are also trying to arrest the mugger.
The staff members of the project rushed to the spot after a rickshaw puller started shouting on seeing the incident, our Pirojpur correspondent reports quoting the official.
Laupha was rushed to Pirojpur district hospital where doctors declared him dead, Sumon said.
The Chinese national died due to excessive bleeding as he was stabbed in the chest, said Dr Nizam Uddin, resident medical officer of the hospital.
