Chinese firm recruited as Bangabandhu Tunnel service provider

The government has appointed China Communications Construction Company (CCCC), the company owned by the Chinese government, as the service provider or operator for the maintenance and toll collection of the 3.32 km long ‘Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Tunnel’ under construction in the Karnaphuli river.
The proposal was approved at the 25th meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Government Procurement (CCGP) held virtually under the chairmanship of Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal. The meeting approved the proposal to appoint China Communications Construction Company Limited as a service provider for five years for the maintenance and toll collection of the tunnel at a cost of approximately Tk 983.82 crore.
According to the sources of road department, Bangabandhu tunnel is the first tunnel under construction under the river in South Asia. The Chinese company is implementing the CCCC project on a G-to-G basis. The tunnel will be opened for vehicular traffic by December 2022. a sources added.
