Bangladesh China Institute of Technology (BCIT) with collaboration of Lanzhou Jiaotong University of China is going to initiate a 4-year undergraduate Power Engineering degree at Stamford University here to create international standard engineers for fast growing huge power sector of Bangladesh.
Under the course, the students will study two years in Dhaka at Stamford University and last two years in Lanzhou of Gansu province of China at Lanzhou Jiaotong University for getting first hand practical training with modern lab facilities.
To this effect, the authorities of Lanzhou Jiaotong University and Stamford University signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at Siddeswari Campus of Stamford University here on Monday. President of Lanzhou Jiaotong University Yang Zijiang and Vice Chancellor of Stamford University Prof. Mohammad Ali Naqi inked the MoU on behalf of their respective sides.
A seven-member Chinese delegation led by Deputy Director General, Foreign Affairs Office of Gansu Province of China Yang Yonggang, BCIT Chairman Masum M Moshin, Managing Director Charlie Cha and Director Probir Kumar Barua were present on the occasion.
BCIT Chairman Masum M Moshin said Bangladesh power sector is growing in a very fast pace and most of the power plants here are being installed by the foreign companies including big Chinese enterprises.
“As per our estimate there will be a need of 8000 to 10,000 skilled engineers in next five to seven years to run the power plants and other engineering units here, but Bangladesh doesn’t have that much local skilled human resources to meet the demand,” he said.
To keep in this mind, BCIT Managing Director Charlie Cha said they invites Chinese universities to come here and provide their technical support to help Bangladesh education sector in creating high skilled international standard manpower to sustain the country’s fast growing development.
“We will ensure job as well for the new graduates of the new course. Just after completion of four years power engineering degree, the graduates can go to the workplace as we will secure their job at different power plants, built by Chinese companies across the country,” he said.
The BCIT is planning to enroll nearly 100 local students for Power Engineering course for the first batch. “The tuition fees are fixed as per Bangladesh local standard, as we don’t have any plan of doing business here by selling education rather we would like to contribute to Bangladesh development,” Charlie added.
The power engineering course following Chinese curriculum will be started at Stamford University from January next year with several numbers of Chances professors. The BCIT is also offering full scholarship to Bangladeshi students for undertaking various undergraduate courses in different Chinese universities every year.
