A China returnee Bangladeshi student, who was admitted to Rangpur Medical College Hospital on Sunday night, was brought to Kurmitola General Hospital in Dhaka, according to the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR).
Prof. Dr Meerjady Sabrina Flora, director of IEDCR, confirmed the matter on Monday. There are no symptoms of coronavirus in his body, she said.
She said, “The has kidney problems. He was brought to Dhaka as an extra precaution since he has arrived from China.”
The 30-year-old Bangladeshi student landed in Dhaka on Sunday morning.
He was admitted to Rangpur Medical College Hospital after he suffered from ‘shortness of breath and vomiting, said Debendranath, chief of hospital’s Medicine Division.
The patient is being kept in ‘isolation,’ he said.
Efforts are underway to send the student to Dhaka’s Kurmitola General Hospital, said hospital’s Medicine Division Assistant Professor Narayan Chandra.
Earlier on Saturday, another Bangladeshi student was admitted to the hospital with fever and respiratory problems after returning from China.
As of Monday, coronavirus has claimed more than 900 lives, mostly in China. The World Health Organization (WHO) has already declared a global health emergency.
The virus is believed to have originated late last year in a food market in Wuhan that was illegally selling wildlife.
New cases are being reported every day around the world, spurring cuts to travel, outbreaks of anti-China sentiment in some places and a surge in demand for protective face masks.
Medical experts say the rising number of human-to-human transmissions outside China suggests a greater potential for the virus to spread further.
The death toll from coronavirus has surpassed the number of deaths from SARS, or Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome.
