China eager to be partner of building digital Bangladesh: Chinese FM

Visiting Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi Sunday expressed his country’s eagerness to be a partner of the government’s endeavors to build a digital Bangladesh by 2021.
The Chinese foreign minister, who is now on a three-day official visit to Bangladesh, expressed this view during the bilateral talks with his Bangladesh counterpart AH Mahmood Ali at the foreign ministry.
In the talks, Wang Yi appreciated the present socio-economic development of the country saying the development, which was achieved under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina can be a role model in the world, said Foreign Secretary Md. Shahidul Haque after the meeting.
The three-hour talks that began at 10 am, mainly covered various bilateral issues including expansion of bilateral trade and business, connectivity especially in road and railway sectors, expanding cooperation in energy and industrial sectors and celebration of 40 years of Dhaka and Beijing diplomatic relations.
The two foreign ministers also reviewed progress of some memorandums of understanding (MoUs) and Letters of Exchange inked between the two countries during the official visit of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to China in June this year.
In the talks, the foreign secretary said the Chinese foreign minister proposed to begin negotiations on Free Trade Agreement (FTA) to scale down the existing trade gap between the two countries.
About road connectivity, Haque said that Chinese foreign minister expressed eagerness to build road connectivity from Chittagong to Kunming via Cox’s Bazar and Myanmar for greater regional interest.
In this connection, the Wang Yi agreed to hold Bangladesh-China and Myanmar tripartite meeting for road connectivity, the foreign secretary added.
Regarding establishment of Bangladesh, India, China and Myanmar-Economic Corridor (BCIM-EC), the foreign secretary said the Chinese foreign minister has shown his country’s interest in this regard for increasing socio-economic cooperation and people-to-people contacts.
Haque said the Chinese foreign minister expressed happiness for Bangladesh’s decision to build an exclusive economic zone for China in the country. He also informed the reporters that Foreign Office Consultation (FOC) between the two countries would be held in 2015.
State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam and Foreign Secretary Shahidul Haque were present at the meeting.
Earlier, Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali received his Chinese counterpart at the ministry. The Chinese foreign minister visited the historical room located on the ground floor of foreign ministry named “Bangladesh Foreign Policy Genesis: A Pictorial Exhibition” before formal beginning of the talks.
The Chinese foreign minister arrived in Dhaka yesterday at the invitation of his Bangladesh counterpart AH Mahmood Ali aimed at further boosting bilateral relations between the two countries.
