China women’s badminton team defeated Spain in Bangkok on Monday to bag the second consecutive victory in the Badminton Uber Cup group stage.
Spain’s Olympic champion Carolina Marin was absent for the second match in a row. Her teammate Clara Azurmendi managed to cause some trouble for Chen Yufei, but Chen saved two set points to take the match 21-16 and 23-21 for China.
China encountered little resistance in the remaining matches. He Bingjiao extended the lead in the second singles by beating Lucia Rodriguez 21-2 and 21-8.
Recent Asian Championship women’s singles winner Wang Zhiyi and women’s doubles winners Chen Qingchen and Jia Yifan also claimed victory in their respective debut in this year’s Uber Cup. Du Yue and Li Wenmei added the final win for China to end the match-up 5-0.
China will take on Chinese Taipei, who also achieved the second win on Monday in the match against Australia, to decide the group winner.
