Diplomatic Correspondent :
China has assured Bangladesh of all cooperation to resolve the Rohingya crisis.
China said it at a meeting participated by the high officials of the both countries at the Bangladesh Secretariat in the capital on Friday.
Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal led the meeting on behalf of Bangladesh and Chinese Public Security Minister Zhao Kezhi headed the delegation from China.
“The top officials of the Chinese Government assured us that Rohingya crisis would be resolved soon. We also urged China to play an active role in resolving the Rohingya crisis,” Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh and China signed three documents on security cooperation at the Home Minister-level meeting.
The documents were signed at a Home Minister-level meeting between the two countries, Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said.
Bangladesh side sought China’s role to repatriate Rohingya people from Bangladesh to Myanmar, their ancestral land, said the Minister.
The Chinese side has appreciated Bangladesh government support in protecting Chinese
investment and for giving them safety,’ the Minister added.
More than 700,000 Rohingyas came to Bangladesh since Myanmar began a crackdown in August 2017. About 400,000 Rohingyas were already residing in Bangladesh from before the latest Myanmar atrocities.
Myanmar has not taken any initiative to implement the Rohingya repatriation agreement it signed with Bangladesh.
Bangladesh has been urging the international community to intensify pressure on Myanmar on the issue.
The Rohingya issue was also discussed when the Chinese Public Security Minister called on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Thursday during his three-day visit.
There has been assurance from China to play a constructive role in resolving the Rohingya issue during the Minister’s meeting with Hasina, according to Khan.
China has realised that Bangladesh had been made a ‘victim’ of the Rohingya crisis. They also applauded Bangladesh for providing shelter to more than one million Rohingya refugees.
Terrorism and cyber-crime prevention were also discussed in the meeting, Khan said.
“We have discussed ways to prevent transnational crimes.”
China expressed interest in investing more in Bangladesh in future, the Home Minister said.
The Chinese minister arrived Dhaka on Thursday on a three-day visit to attend the meeting.
He met Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Thursday evening.
This is the highest-level visit so far by Chinese team this year.
The bilateral relations between Bangladesh and China elevated to the ‘Strategic Partnership of Cooperation’, which maintained a new momentum of cooperation between the armed forces of the two nations, said the Chinese side.
