‘Children get involved in crimes over surrounding reasons’

Justice Muhammad Imman Ali of Appellate Division on Saturday said no children born as criminal or with criminal tendency but gets involved in this over surrounding reasons.
“When I was in New Zealand, I saw police dropping names of 70 to 75 percent children from police station. They send 25 percent children accused to court, from where 10 to 15 gets acquitted through diversion,” he said.
The Appellate Division judge came up with the observations while addressing a workshop titled “Diversion From the Police Station Under the Children Act 2013” as chief guest.
Supreme Court Special Committee for Child Rights and UNICEF jointly organized the workshop for police and social service officials, and it was attended by Justice Sheikh Hassan Arif, Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder, Dhaka Metropolitan Deputy Police Commissioner Farida Yasmin, Department of Social Services Director (institution) Md Abu Masud and UNICEF Bangladesh Child Protection specialist Shabnaz Jaherin, among others.
