Khagrachhari Correspondent :
The number of child patients has been increasing in Khagrachhari District Sadar Hospital recenly.
Due to the extra patient, many people have to take treatment from the hospital corridor without getting bed. Among them, most of the patients suffer from pneumonia.
A total of 291 children have been admitted to the Sadar Hospital this month. Of these, 63 are newborns and 228 children are under 13 years of age. Besides, most of the patients are children among the outdoor patients who came to take treatment. On average, about one hundred to 120 children take treatment every day. Basically, the number of these patients is increasing due to climate change and lack of cleanliness.
Meanwhile, hospital authorities are frustrated to provide adequate medical treatment with a small number of doctors.
Resident of the city’s Shalban area Khadiza Akter said, “I have been in hospital since 24th June with my baby. Although admitted to hospital with fever, later, it was found that my child has pneumonia. Now he is quite healthy”.
Mahendra Lal Tripura, father of one child patient who came from Jamtoli of Matirangara upazila said, “From the day before yesterday, my baby was breathing difficulties. At first, my child was admitted to Matiranga Upazila Health Complex. Later in the morning, he was brought to the district sadar hospital. Now it’s a little better than before.”
The children of Taslima Akter from Maischhari of Mahalchhari upazila, Aloka Chakma of Dighinala upazila and Hasi Chakma from Langdu upazila in Rangamati district are taking treatment in the hospital with pneumonia.
Bashundhara Tripura, a senior staff nurse as well as in charge of child ward of Khagrachhari District Sadar Hospital said, “By June 26 this month, 291 children were admitted to the hospital. Which is far more than the normal number. Although many of them returned by getting treatment, many are still in hospital”.
“Every day, 15 to 18 patients have been released, but the same number of patients are getting admitted”, she added.
Khagrachhari Sadar Hospital’s Pediatrician Dr. Rajendra Tripura said, “The number of patients has increased in the present time compared to normal. Basically children with stomach ache, fever, dyspnoea, diarrhea, and pneumonia are being admitted to the hospital”.
He also said, “The mothers need to be more aware about care of the children. They have to be careful about washing hands before eating, covering food, feeding hot food. Besides, he advised to hang up mosquito net, clean the bush around the house for being aware of malaria.
Khagrachhari Sadar Hospital’s resident doctor Dr. Nayan Moy Tripura said, “Currently three rooms of the child ward are full of patients. Apart from this, due to lack of seat, more than half of the children were kept in the female ward”.

He also added, “Due to less manpower in the hospital, treatment of patients has become a challenge. However, we try our best to serve well.”
