State Minister for Women and Children Affairs Meher Afroze Chumki said child marriage is the main obstacle to women empowerment as it bars girls to become qualified which is needed for entering workplaces.
“People need to thrive themselves as qualified persons for entering workplaces to achieve solvency. But, child marriage refrains the girls from getting this opportunity as they remain busy with maintaining family instead of books,” she said this on Tuesday while addressing a human chain in the city. Women and Children Affairs Ministry organised the event in front of the Jatiya Press Club (JPC) here marking the Child Marriage Prevention Day, said a press release.
Chumki said all should be aware of getting rid-of the curse of child marriage.
Secretary of the Women and Children Affairs Ministry Nasima Begum, Jatiya Mohila Songstha (JMS) Chairman Professor Mamtaz Begum, JMS Executive Director Begum Jahanara Pervin and Women Affairs Department Director General Kazi Rowshon Akter joined the, programme among others. Earlier, a procession was brought out from the Shishu Academy premises marking the International Day of the Girl Child. The procession, led by the state minister ended at JPC after parading different streets of the city.
