Amid escalating concern, the police have intensified checking vehicles to prevent Rohingya refugees from spreading to other districts in an attempt to control the situation.
Top brass of police has also instructed its members to remain alert and take every possible measure in this regard, officials said on Tuesday.
Earlier on September 10, the police headquarters issued directives to the Superintendents of Police in Cox’s Bazar, Bandarban and Chittagong, additional inspector general of Special Branch, Director General of Rapid Action Battalion and Commissioner of Chittagong Metropolitan Police to take necessary measures to stop spread of Rohingyas.
The officials concerned, including three SPs, have especially been asked to intensify surveillance on road, water and airways so that the Rohingya refugees cannot move from Cox’s Bazar to country’s other parts.
They have also been asked to update the list of the refugees and remain alert to ensure that Rohingya women do not fall victim to sexual harassment. Besides, the police were asked to intensify vigilance as none of the Rohingyas could get involved in smuggling or other crimes.
As per directives, seven check-posts have been set up in different strategic points of Cox’s Bazar surrounding the Rohingya camp.
Earlier, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan said the government has alerted the law enforcement agencies to remain alert in this regard.
Officials said the government has a plan to introduce special identity cards for the new Rohingyas. But, the refugees will have to go through a registration process for obtaining the special ID cards.
They also said twenty-seven police check-posts will be set up at different places of the division, including Bandarban, Rangamati and Khagrachhari, to halt their spread. The detained Rohingyas will be sent to a temporary shelter at Balukhali in Ukhiya upazila.
Meanwhile, the refugee camps have already been beyond capacity and new arrivals were staying in schools or huddling in makeshift settlements with no toilets along roadsides and in open fields.
The refugees began pouring from Myanmar’s Rakhine State after a Rohingya insurgent group launched attacks on security posts Aug. 25, prompting Myanmar’s military to launch “clearance operations” to root out the rebels.
