While the functioning of the anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) is to investigate all acts of corruption in the public, private and civil society, its own official was found involved in high-tech cheating in university admission tests.
The anti-graft watchdog on Thursday fired assistant inspector Mofizur Rahman from service after an investigation found the evidence of his involvement with the cheating during the Dhaka University (DU) and Jagannath University (JnU) admission tests in 2012.
The chairman of the ACC, M Badiuzzaman, signed an order of Mofizur’s termination on the day, Pranab Kumar Bhattacharya, public relations officer of ACC, told The New Nation.
Acting on a tip off, Detective Branch (DB) of police arrested Mofizur along with ten others on October 21, 2012 in connection with a case filed with the cheating in admission tests.
The DB also seized 120 pieces of watch-cum mobile sets and chargers from their possession, which were used in sending answers of the question papers to admission seekers through SMS.
Later, the DB filed a case against them, including the ACC official, with Shahbagh Police Station.
“Since mobile phones are not allowed in exam centres, the gang used to give each of their client candidates a watch-like device. These devices were used to send the candidates the answers of multiple-choice questions during exams via SMS,” Mashiur Rahman, additional deputy commissioner of DB, had told a press briefing after their arrest.
On December 30, 2012, the Commission launched a departmental inquiry against Mofizur Rahman and asked him to submit a written statement in this regard.
Mofiz, on January 20, 2013, gave reply to the Commission. As his explanations were not acceptable, the ACC assigned an investigation officer to look into the matter.
The Commission after scrutiny of the enquiry report submitted by the investigation officer found his link with the question paper leakage and finally terminated him from the service.
