Chattogram City Mayor AJM Nasir Uddin said there will be no dustbins in the city area by next three or four years and after assumption of charge of City Mayor, a total of 600 dustbins were removed out of 1300 dustbins.
Garbage, wastes will be dumped in the dump station directly after collecting from the areas . The proposed dumping of garbage to the station directly is being implemented . The city mayor disclosed it while addressing the city dwellers at a program of ‘Face to Face Public’ representatives and the mass in observance of four years anniversary of the term of the incumbent city mayor at Madarbari Ward premises recently.
The city mayor also said all sorts of city development works will be implemented in phase and it is quite impossible to do all the tasks overnight . He also apprised that cent percent road electrification program at a cost of Tk260 crores under process. He further informed the audience that development works worth of Tk. 2, 550 crores were spent from 1995 to 2014 whereas Tk.2700 spent during last 4 years and additional project of Tk.2300 crores taken in hand. Mayor further said total administrative expenses of the CCC is about Tk.270 crores and total municipal tax comes about Tk150 crores and Tk.123 crores MT was realized last year.
Following the kindness of the Prime Minister, the development works of the city corporation is running with special fund allocations from ECNEC. Ward councilor of Madarbari ward Mazharul Islam chowdhury presided over it duly attended by councilor Nilu Nag and former Councilor Rekha Alam Chowdhury as special guests. AJM Nasir Uddin took charge as mayor of Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) on July 26 in 2015. Nasir took a good number of initiatives to fulfill his electoral pledge of turning the Chattogram city as clean and green one.
Beside the pledge, his electoral manifesto also featured with the promise of ensuring civic amenities following needs of the city dweller, making the city free from water logging, gridlock and pollution. In the manifesto Nasir also mentioned his plans for streamlining traffic system, taking income generating projects and expanding the education services.
“I think, I am proceeding though the right track as huge changes could be made in the basic services of the CCC,” said Nasir. “Garbage management system witnessed huge development and the city is now much clean compared to any previous period. It could be possible following introduction of door to door garbage collection process for which CCC distributed over nine lakh bins to the city dwellers free of cost,” said the mayor.
Following the initiative, some 600 dustbins, out of total 1,350, were removed from the city. If city dwellers extend their cooperation hundred percent successes will be visible in this regard, he observed. CCC now has a sophisticated and fully-automated asphalt plant. The damaged roads have already been repaired, he said.
“Two-thirds of the total roads were of soil or brick in the city. To achieve the target of carpeting all the roads by my tenure we have already carpeted half of the total roads,” he said. Besides, there was only one-fourth drain network while many of them were ineffective and unplanned. Works is also going on to bring the total city under drain-network, said Nasir, also general secretary of Awami League (AL) Chattogram City Unit.
The initiative for bringing the whole city under LED lighting system also advanced much and half of the city areas have already been brought under the initiative. A new project in this regard was also approved recently, he said. With implementation of the new project, the entire city will be covered by the initiative which will play significant role in curbing the criminal activities in the night hours, said the mayor. Putting up his pledge for streamlining the traffic movement, Nasir said some areas of the city were marked for car parking while bus-bay and modern passenger-sheds are being developed in the city for offering a comfortable journey to the commuters. Besides, efforts are on to develop a truck terminal in the city’s Halishahar and bus terminal in Baluchhara areas.
Regarding bringing the hawkers under management of sitting for a specified period the mayor said the system is yet to come under full discipline. Works is also going on in this connection, said the mayor. He also informed that a good number of footbridges including two in front of the Chattogram Export Processing Zone will be set up for smooth and safe movement of pedestrians, mainly for the students. CCC is also going to set up a modern slaughter house in the city’s Chandgaon area under a project taken by Livestock Department involving Tk 80 crore. Regarding beautification of the city the mayor said works in this regard have already been started and changes will be visible very soon.
Several hundred conservancy workers of the CCC now live in a risky state at worn out buildings in four Sebok Colonies in the city. To address the crisis, a total of ten 14-storey residential buildings will be developed for 1,400 families of the conservancy workers. Regarding sufferings of commuters of the Agrabad Access Road and Port Connecting Roads, which remained dilapidated for long, the mayor said .
