Police say, Jubo League leader Abul Hashem, reportedly to death in Chattogram’s Rangunia, was in fact murdered.
“It was not an accident, it was murder,” said Chattogram District Police Additional Superintendent (Sadar) Rezaul Masud on
Sunday. “One person has been detained over the incident.” The detainee, Zifu Begum, 35, is a local resident. Police learned during an initial interrogation that she had a ‘passing acquaintance’ with Hashem and killed him after facing ‘harassment’ from the Jubo League leader.
Police recovered the burned body of Rangunia Upazila Vice President Abul Hashem Bachar, 50, from a home in Rangunia municipal Ward-9’s Ichamoti area on Friday.
At the time police had said they believed a gas leak had led to the fire.
“Hashem’s whole body was burned,” Rangunia Police Station OC Imtiaz Bhuiyan had told bdnews24.com that day. “There was a gas cylinder in the room. It was leaking. There were no windows in the building so the gas collected. The furniture also burned.” Hashem’s wife and child were not home that night. Locals reported the fire after seeing the smoke that morning. “Zifu Begum confessed to Hashem’s murder in an initial investigation,” a police official said. “She says she drugged juice she served to Hashem, opened the cylinder and lit the fire before leaving the home.” More details would be available at a press conference later on, police said.
