BSS, Chattogram :
All the 15 upazilas of the Chattogram district have been brought under hundred percent electrification coverage demonstrating the government’s firmness to ensure access of all citizens to power by 2021.
Power production in Chattogram region also increased significantly in the last one decade as the 23 units of 18 power plants of the region is now producing 1,931 megawatt (MW) against 1600MW, the total demand of the greater Chattogram, said a PDB official.
Besides, the Power Development Board (PDB) has embarked upon a Taka 2,600 crore mega project for ensuing cent percent power coverage in the 11 districts of the entire Chattogram division by 2021,” said Chief Engineer of PDB, Chattogram southern zone, Prabir Kumar Sen.
The present government’s most surprising achievement is to ensure uninterrupted power supply to the secluded Sandwip Island of about four lakh people from the national grid through submarine cables.
“After Sandwip, the Kutubdia Island is going to have power connectivity from the national grid of Power Development Board (PDB) through submarine cables,” said Sen.
He said PDB (distribution), southern region, has embarked upon a Taka 80 crore project to supply power to the island as part of the Taka 2,600 crore mega power project.
Load shedding, which was a common phenomenon during the BNP-Jamaat alliance rule in Chattogram district, inluding the city, has come down to almost zero level now.
“The half power generation out of the total demand from three power plants, the residents of Chattogram had to enjoy nominal advantage of power supply and to depend on power from the national grid.
During the earlier regimes, total generations from all power plants across the country were 3,268 MWs which was meagre in comparison with the demands. On that period, load shedding was the regular phenomenon in the country.
To mitigate the power crisis in greater Chattogram, the government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has installed a number of power plants including rental power plants and peaking power plants in Chattogram resulting in quick removal of persistent load shedding and excess generation.
“The present people’s friendly government under the dynamic leadership of Sheikh Hasina has taken a number of mega power projects aimed at generating 30,000MW power by 2030,” said Sen.
Meanwhile, construction of two coal based power plants with a generation capacity of 650MW each at Matarbari in Moheshkali under Cox’s Bazar district is progressing fast. Plans for setting up two more mega power projects with a total generation capacity of 20,000MW in Moheskhali are under process.
Besides, move is underway to set up a 1320MW coal based power plant under private sector in Banshkhali upazila of the district.
Works of LNG turbine 600MW plant at Raozan and the 150MW capacity power plant at Mirsarai Economic Zone with the financial assistance of PDB and REB are progressing.
Sen also said installation of 200MW capacity of Solar Power Plants using renewable energy at Raozan, Fatikchari, Kaptai Rangunia is under process.
He further said PDB is implementing all these mega power plants following the directives of the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to support the massive development activities of the country.
If these power projects are implemented properly, none will be left without power across the country and the country will attain sustainable development goal as desired by the present government.
