A young man drowned in a pond after being chased by police at Barshapara village in Kotalipara upazila on Saturday.
The deceased was identified as Jewel Fakir,32, son of Taiyab Ali Fakir, a resident of the same village.
Mamunur Rashid, president of Sonar Bangla High School, alleged that a police team picked up Jewel from the village and tortured him at about 11:30 am.
As the youth tried to flee, the policemen chased off him.
At one stage of chase, Jewel fell into a pond in the area and drowned.
However, Abdul Latif, officer-in-charge of Kotalipara Police Station, denied the allegation.
The body was sent to Gopalganj 250-Bed General Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
There was no mark of injury on the body, the OC said, adding that actions will be taken in this regard after getting the autopsy report.
