Two people have drowned in Bhola and Chuadanga districts after allegedly being chased by policemen.
In Bhola, a farmer-Abu Jamil, 50, son of Mohammad Shahjahan-met his watery burial in a pond after being hit and chased by two constables on Bhola-Bheduriya launch ghat road at Bheduriya village in sadar upazila on Monday morning.
Two local residents said Jamil was drying paddy in the sun on the road around 7:30am.
The two constables from Bhelumia police investigation camp-Abdul Hannan and Ismail-who were going to Bheduriya launch ghat
for duty — asked Jamil why he was using the road for drying paddy. At one stage, they locked into an altercation and Hannan threw a stick towards Jamil and chased him. Having hit by the stick, Jamil lost his balance and slipped into the pond.
Later, locals rescued him from the pond and took him to sadar hospital where doctors declared him dead. Outraged by the incident, locals confined the two policemen to a house at the village, and blocked the road halting traffic.
On information, district police super Mohammad Moniruzzaman and officer-in-charge of Bhola Model Police Station Mobashwer Ali visited the spot. Later, the authorities suspended the two constables.
In Chuadanga, the body of a man who drowned in the Mathabhanga River at Pirpur village in Damurhuda upazila on Saturday night after allegedly being chased by a team of detectives, was found in the river on Monday. The deceased was identified as Nazim Uddin, son of late Azizul Haque of Ibrahimpur village in the upazila. Locals said when a group of 7-8 people, including Nazim, was taking local liquor at Sweeper Colony near Sadar Police Station around 8pm on Saturday, a team of Detective Branch of police chased them.
Being chased, the alleged drug addicts jumped into the nearby Mathabhanga River to escape arrest. However, all but Nazim managed to swim ashore.
Locals found the floating body of Nazim in the river on Monday noon and informed police.
Later, the law enforcers recovered the body and sent it to hospital morgue for autopsy. Contacted, in-charge of district DB Yunus Ali said no DB team carried out any drive in the district town on Saturday night.
