Xulhaz-Tonoy murder: Charges pressed against 8 militants

The Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit of Police on Sunday pressed charges against eight members of banned militant outfit Ansar Al Islam, including sacked army Major Zia in connection with the killing of LGBT Magazine Editor Xulhaz Mannan and his friend Mahbub Rabbi Tonoy in 2016.
Inspector Md Monirul Islam of CTTC unit, who is the Investigating Officer (IO) of the case, submitted the charge sheet in the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s court in
Dhaka.The IO Manirul Islam said that at least 13 people were involved in the double murder. All of them were the members of banned militant outfit Ansar Al Islam.
Among them, eight were identified, but are not.  
The chragesheet were sent to Home Ministry on May 13 for approval. It was submitted in the court after approval of the ministry, the officials said.
Four of the accused who are now behind the bars are Mozammel Hossain alias Saimon, 25, Media Head and member of intelligence wing of banned Islamic outfit Ansar Al Islam, Md Arafat Rahman, 24, Coordinator of military wing of Ansar Al Islam, Md Sheikh Abdullah, 27, and member of military wing of the militant group Asadullah, 25..
On the other hand, Major Zia and three others have been on the run. They are Akram Hossain, 30, Sabbirul Haque Chowdhury, 26, and Md Zunaid Ahmad alias Maulana Zuned alias Zunaid, 26.
Earlier, Xulhaz, also a former official of USAID, was brutally hacked to death at his Kalabagan residence along with his friend Tonoy by the militants on April 25, 2016.
A case was filed with Kalabagan Police Station on the same day in this connection.
Initially, Detective Branch (DB) of DMP took over the investigation into the double murder incident.
Later, on November 15 in 2017, DMP’s CTTC unit took over the duty of investigation and arrested four persons in connection with the killings. Interrogation revealed the names of those involved in the planning and execution of the killings and the organisation behind them.
