A Dhaka court, set up inside Keraniganj Central Jail on Monday deferred till November 12 the hearing on charge framing against BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia and eight others in the Barapukuria coalmine graft case.
Judge of the Special Judge’s Court-2 of Dhaka, A S M Ruhul Imran, passed the order after considering a time prayer filed by Khaleda’s lawyer Zia Uddin Zia.
The lawyer said, “BNP Chairperson has been
admitted to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) since April 1 for treatment. The jail authority failed to produce her in the court due to her sickness. On that ground we placed a time prayer to the court and the court granted time till November 12.”
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed the case on February 26, 2008 accusing Khaleda and 15 others of causing a loss of Tk 159 crore to the state exchequer by awarding a contract of operating Barapukuria coalmine to a Chinese company, abusing power.
On October 5, 2008, the ACC pressed charges against Khaleda and 14 others.
Six persons, including former Finance Minister Saifur Rahman, were dropped from charge sheet following their death.
Khaleda Zia landed in jail on February 8 last year after a Dhaka court sentenced her to five years imprisonment in Zia Orphanage Trust case. The High Court on October 30 last year enhanced the punishment of Khaleda to 10 years imprisonment in this case.
Besides, a Dhaka court on October 29 last year convicted Khaleda and sentenced her to seven years’ imprisonment in the Zia Charitable Trust corruption case.
