Metropolitan Sessions’ Judge’s Court of Dhaka yesterday framed charges against the Prothom Alo editor Motiur Rahman and eight others in the case lodged over the death of Dhaka Residential Model College student Naimul Abrar Rahat.
Judge KM Imrul Qayesh of the court fixed December 14 to record the depositions of the witnesses on Thursday morning. The court exempted Anisul
Haque, the Editor of the Kishor Alo, a publication of the Prothom Alo, from the charges.
Earlier, the defence filed petitions to acquit eight accused including Motiur Rahman and Anisul Hoque from the case.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Jasim on September 20 transferred the case to this court as it got ready for trial.
The other eight accused are Prothom Alo Senior Sub-Editor Mohitul Alam, Head of Event and Activation Kabir Bakul, Executives Shah Paran Tushar and Shuvashish Pramanik Shuvo and Jasim Uddin, Mosharraf Hossain, Sujon and Kamrul Hawlader, who were in charge of providing electricity for the function.
The court on September 3 granted bail to Anisul Hoque, Mohitul Alam, Kabir Bakul, Shah Paran Tushar and Shuvashish Pramanik in the case. The order was passed as the accused surrendered to the court and pleaded for bail in the case.
Ninth grader Naimul Abrar Rahat died after being electrocuted behind the stage at an event organized by the Kishor Alo, a publication of the Prothom Alo, on the Dhaka Residential Model College premises on November 1, 2019.
The court on October 1, accepted the probe report of the case. On November 6, last year, Rahat Abrar’s father Mojibur Rahman filed the case with the court.
