The 8th Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court of Dhaka yesterday framed charges against Shamima Nur Papia and her husband Mofizur Rahman Sumon in a case filed under the Narcotics Control Act with the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station.
Judge Amirul Islam of the court also fixed March 1 to record the depositions of the witnesses in the case. But, the accused claimed, they are not guilty in the incident and demanded justice from the court.
Earlier on February 22, last year, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested Papia and her husband, with two of their accomplices, from Hazrat Shahjalal
International Airport with counterfeit banknotes, foreign currencies and cash money.
RAB later raided their two luxurious flats in the capital’s Indira Road area and recovered a foreign-made pistol, two magazines, 20 bullets, five bottles of foreign liquor and Taka 58.41 lakh in cash, among other things.
Later, one case was filed with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station under the Arms Act, one under Narcotics Control Act and another case was filed under the Special Powers Act.
On September 10, the Investigating Officer of Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station filed a charge sheet against Papia and others in the Narcotics case.
Meanwhile, Judge KM Imrul Kayesh of the Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court of Dhaka on October 12, last year, sentenced Papia and her husband to 20 years in prison in a case filed under the Arms Act.
The court also sentenced them to seven years imprisonment under another section of the Arms Act.
But, the judge mentioned in the order that the imprisonment under the two sections will continue concurrently.
