Rape of DU student: Charge framed against lone accused Majnu

The Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-7 of Dhaka on Sunday framed charges against Md Majnu, the lone accused in the case filed over the rape of a Dhaka University student in the capital’s Kurmitola area in January.
Judge Mosammat Quamrunnahar of the tribunal passed the order after scrutinizing the case docket. Earlier, Mojnu, now in the jail, pleaded not guilty
 Before that, the judge of the tribunal read out the charges to the accused through videoconferencing. The tribunal judge, sent a virtual link to the jail authorities of Kashimpur High Security Jail in Gazipur.
Later, the judge fixed September 9 to start the trial of the case. On March 16, Detective Branch (DB) Inspector Abu Bakar Siddique, who is also the Investigation Officer (IO) of the case, submitted the charge sheet against Majnu to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court of Dhaka.
The IO also brought charges of assaulting the girl and snatching the victim’s mobile phone, wristwatch and money from her possession.
On January 5, a student of Dhaka University was raped after she was forcibly taken away from near the Kurmitola bus stop to a solitary place near Shewra level crossing at around 7:30pm after she got off a DU bus.
She regained sense at about 10:00pm, then she managed to reach her friend’s house. Her friend took her to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for treatment.
The next day, the girl’s father filed the case with Cantonment Police Station, accusing some unknown people. On January 8, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested Majnu, 30, from Shewra area. Later, on January 16, Majnu gave a confessional statement in a Metropolitan Magistrate Court of Dhaka.
